Friday 21 February 2020.
A lovely morning spent with the team at SANCCOB experiencing memories related by members of the events from the early days of the rehabilitation centre at Pentz Drive in Rietvlei.
The work done by the centre over 50 years is amazing to say the least, and the early days this was done by volunteers with no knowledge of how to treat seabirds traumatised by disasters such as the oil spills off the Cape Coast. The work done by these people was ground breaking, with limited resources, under great pressure and led the way to modern tequniques in helping the African Penguin survive.
Today the new centre at Rietvlei is a totally different facility than that of the past. Self sufficient for water with a state of the art filtration system, it boasts beautiful pools for recovering seabirds and has a vetinary surgery perfect for treating all kinds of injuries.
The visit on the 21st February included a guided tour of the premises which I would recommend for all visitors to the Blaauwberg area.
